Here’s a painting I love. It’s ‘Dennis Relaxing’ by George Underwood, and I think it’s one of the greatest paintings I’ve ever seen. It could be about nothing or everything, but when I look at it I see a story. Someone or something could be hiding just inside the doorway. Shadow and cracks are converging upon him. He seems oblivious, having fallen asleep. Will he wake up in cold shadow? AND WHAT IS UP WITH THAT WHITE BLOB? Is it a puddle of water? Snow? And how can there be snow? Perhaps it is some sort of unknown life form attempting to make contact. Or perhaps not. Whatever the white blob is, Dennis is surrounded by darkness, yet even in this fleeting moment he finds serenity and warmth in the sun.
